2009 Awards
Les Cheries
(Corolle $45 Score:)

We loved these dolls when they first hit the market back in 2003. They received a Platinum Award and we are now giving them a Blue Chip Award for 2009. Chloe, Camille, Clare, Cecile and Cathy are a multicultural collection of 13" dolls and are marketed as "best friend" dolls and are purposefully not fashion dolls. Our favorites this year are Cecile, an African American girl, with jeans, a knit shrug and glorious hair or Chloe, a brunette ballerina in a gossamer tutu. They are meant to look like girls of today. There are new clothes almost every year--but this is a collection that should not be missed.

2004 Awards
Language Littles Dolls
(Language Littles $39.99 Score:) These 16 " soft rag dolls with yarn hair are pretty pricey, but huggable and have sound chips in their hands. Give one hand a squeeze and it says several phrases in two languages, squeeze the other hand and it counts in the Spanish, Italian, French or Chinese-depending on which doll you bring home. Will it make your child bi-lingual-not really, but it is a small nod in that direction and just might prompt further interest. Also available in child size dolls sans soundchips and only $50 for an oversized playmate that can wear you child's clothes and will say whatever she imagines it says ...in any language!

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2004.

2005 Award
American Girl Nellie O'Malley
(American Girl $84 Score:) The company alternates each year between historic dolls and current dolls. This year, they introduce Samantha's best friend, Nellie. With a big blue bow in her strawberry blonde hair and a white dress with matching blue sash, she’s the image of an Irish girl of 1906. Her story focuses on her promise to care for her younger sisters when her mother dies. Still top rated, Kaya, the first Native American doll from the Nez Perce people in the collection. PLATINUM AWARD ’03. 7 & up. (800) 845-0005.

2007 Award
Only Hearts Club Collection
(OHC Group $15 Score:) These 9" dolls have bendable bodies, delicately etched faces, and charming accessories, as well as small books that relate to typical problems of girlhood. Girls will need considerable dexterity to get the little shoes and clothing on and off. Unlike most fashion dolls today, these have outfits that would be acceptable to well-heeled parents and grandparents. They are dressed like girls—not funky streetwalkers in training. Our testers were thrilled with the Ballet Studio Theater ($50) and Stable ($75)—both were PLATINUM AWARD winners last year. New Platinum Award winners for 2007, a Sleeper Sofa ($19.99)—a first in Toy Land! And Sleeping Bags ($9.95), a clever tie-in to a favorite activity, sleepovers! Our testers also loved the Rock Star Collection. (We pass on the My Little Pony-inspired Fantasy Pet collection of plush animals that includes lavender horses and dolphin riding mermaid—just not our thing.)

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.
