2007 Award
Bebe Do Graceful
(Corolle $49.99 Score:) A very sweet 14" baby doll that is just right for pretend play. Our testers love this collection of dolls that feel so soft and smell like vanilla. The head and limbs are vinyl with a soft fabric body that is extremely huggable. Comes with a bunny and bottle. We'd recommend pairing this doll with a stroller or the Play Nursery from Corolle.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
American Girl Jess
(American Girl $87 Score:) Jess, is this year's Girl of the Year from American Girl's contemporary collection of dolls. She's an Amerasian, 18" tall with dark brown eyes and her hair comes in loose braids. Her dad is Irish American and her mom is Japanese American. While the book points out that they come from different backgrounds, they both love archeology. Her family goes to Belize so the accessories that you can also add include a passport, a camera and a kayak.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Emperor Penguin Chicks
(Wildlife Artists Inc. $20 Score:) Choose either the handsome 21" traditional plush Emperor Chick($40) that looks half grown or the 13” Emperor Penguin Chick ($20) that has downy like plush with a recently hatch look. Either are an adorable armful and a welcome huggable for the very current penguin craze.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
FurReal Friends Newborn Piglet and Lamb
(Hasbro $12.99 Score:) Two plush barnyard animals, a piglet and a lamb, that oink and baa and wiggle their heads and bodies when stroked. They come with a small feeding bottle, as well. These are novelty items, but fun little 9” critters for a fistful of fun. They would also be enjoyed on an office desk too (we speak from personal experience). 4 & up.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2007 Award
Fashion Angels Living Dolls
(Fashion Angels Enterprises $20 Score:) A funky collection of multicultural dolls that have eclectic clothing, e.g., printed canvas sneakers paired with embroidered denim jackets with lacy skirts. There’s Lulu, Debo, Bebe and Izzy – all are poseable dolls and can exchange both clothes and wigs (a new twist in toyland). We wonder if the wigs were inspired by all those home shopping network wig segments (ok, sometimes we do watch way too much television.)

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2007.

2008 Award
Madeline Cloth Doll
(Alexander Doll Company $69.00 Score:)

Here she is in her blue coat, plaid dress and yellow hat on her red yarn hair, an oversized 29” tall, all fabric, with stitched features. Her coat and dress come off, but the rest of her clothing is not. This is safe enough for toddlers but appealing to preschoolers who will know Madeline’s stories from books and videos.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2008. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2008 Award
Lia Interactive Baby Doll
(Corolle $89.95 Score:) A high-tech doll from an unexpected source. The French doll Lia speaks four languages by placing one of three bracelets on her wrist (her default language is French, of course). Lia will tell you when she's hungry, needs to potty (just pretend), and most endearing, she asks for a kiss; but she’s not intrusive and demanding. You can also turn off the high-tech function and you have a classic vanilla-smelling baby doll. She’s a big armful, a 17" bald baby who comes with bib, spoon, feeding dish, and potty.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2008.

2008 Award
Classique Nursery Twin Stroller
(Corolle $80 Score:) This blue 30" double stroller evoked a chorus of oohs and aaahs in our office and with our testers. Looks like the current double strollers in design, with three wheels and stacked seats. We especially loved the adjustable push bar. For a smaller on-the-go stroller, consider American Girl’s yellow and blue Collapsible Stroller ($34), designed for their 15" Bitty Baby Dolls. The Bitty Twins Double Stroller ($48) doesn’t compare to the quality of Corolle's.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2008.

2008 Award
Karito Kids Travel Charmers
(KidsGive $19.99 Score:)

A welcome new collection of funky multi-cultural dolls with international stories and attitude! Each doll in the new collection is 16" tall, soft, huggable, with an outfit that will appeal to the five and up crowd, and a travel story of her own. There's Zoe from North America, Wan Ling travels from China to Japan, Pita goes to Brazil, Gia travels from Italy to France and Lulu travels from Kenya to Madagascar. A portion of the profits fun children's humanitarian projects. Each doll comes with a code that unlocks karitokids.com (a site that includes games and talks to the concept of giving). Our testers really liked that they could take these dolls along easily. They're slightly more grown up than Groovy Girls. We love the commitment to diversity.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2008. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
