Important Advisory:

We are now requiring companies to provide us with documentation that their products have been tested by an independent lab for phthalates and lead.
Please click here for submission requirements for new products. However, as we are not a lab, we will not be independently verifying those results. Also, with the exception of the 2008 Platinum Toy Awards, toys submitted for review prior to January 2008 were not tested for lead.

Like good books, CDs are gifts that kids return to again and again. They introduce music of different cultures, they invite kids to sing along, get up and dance or to sit back and listen. Among our favorites of the season are storybooks for children of all ages. For children who have grown up with large and small screens and visual input for most of their lives, the act of simply listening to a story requires a new and important skill. They must visualize in their mind's eye the images they are hearing. This is not unlike what a reader must do as they enter the scenes in a novel. Listening takes one less step. The child listener does not need to deal with the abstract symbols of print on the page, yet, it is a related skill. Gifted narrators also add the sound of drama to their reading, presenting to your readers the way a story might "sound" in their own head as they read to themselves. To develop these skills you will need to turn off the TV, the computer and gather round and listen. Do it on long trips in the car or after dinner when the family can listen together to a chapter or two of a book that can become your own nightly entertainment. It's one of the ways to get some down time together when everyone can sit back and enjoy!
  A Child's Christmas

( Rock Me Baby Records $$15.99$ ) We're big fans of Susie Tallman. She has an engaging voice and a wit that comes through in her music for children. A Child's Christmas is a wonderful collection of holiday standards including Deck the Halls, Santa Claus is Coming to Town and We Wish You a Merry Christmas...intermixed with Merry Christmas greetings in various languages. A great choice for the holidays- it will get everyone in the holiday spirit! Platform: CD. Age: Infant, Toddler, Preschool. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009

  Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

( Listening Library $$25.95$ ) You may not want to admit it, but if you have never gotten through all of Lewis Carroll’s Alice, let Jim Dale take you down the rabbit hole and beyond. Who better than this master storyteller can navigate you through the world of the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and all the other whimsical characters created in 1865? Dale’s reading makes this classic live with a new vitality. Platform: CD. Age: Early School Years, Late School Years. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009

  Anne of Green Gables

( Listening Library $$19.95$ ) Kate Burton reads this classic tale of Anne Shirley who is orphaned and sent to live with Marilla Cuthbery and Matthew. They were expecting a strong boy to help with chores and instead they get a hot-headed girl who can't seem to avid one dispute after another. This is a tender tale that we also recommend on video. But listening to the story without images on a screen demands imagination-something Anne Shirley has a plentiful supply of herself. Platform: CD. Age: Late School Years. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009

Baby Brains, The Smartest Baby in the World

( Candlewick $$14.99$ ) What a joy to find a tall tale like Baby Brains in a perfect little package with a DVD that reverses to a CD, a hard covered book and play stickers and scene for retelling the Simon James’ funny story. It’s about a precocious baby who grows up very fast and is so smart he is picked to travel to outer space. But smart as he is there is something missing. Baby Brains is taking a space walk when he announces to the world that he wants his Mommy! Early school lagged kids will see the humor and truth in this funny little story. Platform: CD. Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009

Beethoven's Wig 4, Dance Along Symphonies

( Rounder $$14.99$ ) Another entertaining sequel to the winning series of classical music with some mighty silly lyrics. Richard Perlmutter has created these ditties to such old favorites as The Moonlight Sonata, Swan Lake, The Habenera of Carmen and The Washington Post. Play them with his singing or play them straight up as instrumentals that kids can use for conducting or dancing along. These are not quite as amusing as the first CD, but as series go, it's pretty good. Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009

  Blue Moo

( Rounder $$11.98$ ) I just want to give Sandra Boynton and Michael Ford a hug for coming through with a wonderful collection of witty music that is performed by a really interesting mix of performers including John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting, Patti LuPone, Neil Sedaka, B.B. King and Davy Jones of Monkey fame. Highlights include Davy Jones singing "My Personal Penguin"...it's just so nice to hear his voice again and sing a song that's fun...and Patti LuPone singing the Rabbit Tango as only she could! The collection is right on target for kids without being about going to the potty or about your three year old's responsibility to the global community. It's happily and beautifully smart, intelligent and entertaining. Platform: CD. Age: Toddler, Preschool, Early School Years. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009

  Can't You Sleep, Little Bear?

( Candlewick $$14.99$ ) Martin Waddell’s well loved storybook about a little bear who cannot sleep comes to life in this wonderful combo package that includes a book, DVD, CD, and activity stickers with play scene. The DVD includes a lightly animated version of the story adapted from Barbara Firth’s illustrations. It is narrated by Dan Russell and is accompanied by music that fits the soothing bedtime storybook. Turn the disk over and it can be listened to with the picturebook. One track includes signals for turning the pages. Packed in a carry case, this is an ideal take along for plane or auto rides and quiet times when a story is just the ticket. 3-6 Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009

  Make Your Own Someday

( The Jimmies $$15$ ) Brad, Tim, Matt, Ashley and Dan are the Jimmies- one the brightest additions to the world of children's music. You'll want to get up and dance when you put on "Make Your Own Someday: Silly Songs for the Shorter Set." Remember our rule is that everyone in the car needs to be happy with our selections--and the Jimmies get that - blending lyrics that are fun for kids without being so sappy that the front seat occupants are rolling their eyes. They introduce kids to instruments and different musical styles in a pleasant, upbeat way that you will not mind hearing often! Platform: CD. Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009

  Owl Babies

( Candlewick $$14.99$ ) Another gem by Martin Waddell and illustrated by Patrick Benson are brought together in a marvelous package that is a perfect take along on trips or for quiet times at home. Three little owls awake to find their Mommy is gone. The three comfort themselves by sitting close to each other in a tree top awaiting her return. All’s well that ends well and this small tale of separation is a reassuring one that speaks to a common childhood concern. The story is lightly animated on DVD with art adapted from the original illustrations. Or, lip the disk and open the book and follow along with the narration that has signals for when to turn the page. Like other sets in the Candlewick series there are stickers based on the art and a scene for moving the play pieces about and retelling the story…or making up further adventures. All in all a great play values! 3-6 Platform: CD. Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Award 2009
