2003 Award
A Single Shard
( Listening Library $25 Score: ) Though the setting of 12th-century Korea may sound esoteric for young readers, the story of Tree-ear, an orphan boy, reflects the hunger all young people share in their need for caring people as they shape their dreams of the future. Take this three-tape set, narrated by Graeme Malcolm, on your next long drive. A treat! 8-80. Also new, Star Wars: Jedi Quest, The Way of the Apprentice, and The Trail of the Jedi (by Jude Watson/narrated by Jonathan Davis ). These are the stories of Anakin Skywalker before Episode II. Here we find him in his Jedi training with Obi-Wan Kenobi. We found these tapes more engaging than the junior novelization of Episode II (two stars). Still top rated: James Avery's masterful telling of the unforgettable Bud, Not Buddy PLATINUM AWARD '01. 10 & up.

Age: Later School Years. Award Year: 2003.
