2010 Award
All Star!
( (by Jane Yolen/ illus. Jim Burke, Philomel $17.99 Score: )

Collectors of baseball cards are sure to know of the most valuable one of all, the Honus Wagner baseball card. But they may not know the inspiring story of the Hall of Fame player who was one of the greatest shortstops in baseball history. Jane Yolen's smooth as silk narrative brings his story from his boyhood as a poor coalminer's son to his glory days as a Pittsburg Pirate. What made his image on a baseball card so collectible? Honus Wagner did not like the idea of his likeness being sold in cigarette packs. He believed that this was a bad message for kids, so he insisted that they stopped using his image. Not only are the cards rare, sounds like the man was, too. Jim Burke's handsome illustrations will please baseball buffs, giving them a glimpse into the look of the game and fans at the turn of the 20th century. Yolen does not miss the opportunity to point out that Wagner achieved what he did "without drugs or fancy training programs or million-dollar incentives." A solid and inspiring story . 7 & up.
