Emma's Poem, The Voice of the Statue of Liberty
( by Linda Glaser/ illus. by Claire A. Nivola, Houghton Mifflin $16 Score: )

Emma's Poem celebrates the caring person, Emma Lazarus, who wrote the famous poem inscribed at the base of Lady Liberty. The idea of the Statue of Liberty as a welcoming symbol she has become, was not a given in 1883. It was a gift from France to America, to represent the two country's shared love liberty. Yet, it was Emma's poem that gave the gift new and fuller meaning. Her poem, which was used to raise funds for the pedestal, succeeded in changing the minds and hearts of many who had given little thought to the immigrants who were "yearning to breathe free." Emma Lazarus' words defined the majestic statue that holds the welcoming torch of liberty to light the way for all who come to our shores. 5-8
