American Girl Super Scrapbook Kit
(American Girl $29.99 Score: )

When you think of a scrapbook for school-aged girls, this oversized beauty looks as it should! There is a photo pocket on the front cover so she can change her picture from time to time. It's a good sized book (12 1/2  X 13 1/2 ) with 20 acetate covered pages to protect the photos, souvenirs, and work girls will do in designing their pages. It comes loaded with stencils, cut out shapes, journaling stickers, bubble stickers, gems and foam frames.  Each of the pages has color and patterns, providing colorful backgrounds for the personal items girls will add around their photos, programs, clippings, tickets stubs and other treasures. 8 & up.

Sketch-Foam Print Making Kit
(Eye Can Art  $28 Score: )

Everything needed for making real prints is packed into this canister that includes clear instructions, foam plates to sketch on, two tubes of printing ink, a brayer, printing paper and a pencil for drawing on the foam. This is an excellent way to learn a new art form that kids can continue to use. When the foam plates are used up, cut the sides away from foam packing trays that veggies come wrapped in and you are ready to print some more. This is an art form that students in my first and second grade classes enjoyed years ago. Now it is done up in a kit with all the materials gathered and ready for action. 5 & up.

Small World Deco Bathroom Set
(Small World Toys $29.99 Score: )

A four-piece porcelain set that can be painted with original designs. The set comes with a cup, liquid soap dispenser, four-place toothbrush holder and soap dish. The permanent paint dries in the air, no baking needed, though you will want to protect the work surface and clothes of young artists. This is not a craft kit for young children, since the pieces are breakable. Older kids can paint the pieces and give them to grandparents, teacher, or for their own bathroom. 8 & up.

Creativity for Kids Stunt Squadron
(Creativity for Kids $18 Score: )

Finding craft projects for boys can be challenging. This kit comes with five foam planes that fly well both indoors and out. Before they start flying however, kids can decorate them with the metallic foil stickers and color-in stickers that can be customized with the 8 fine tipped mini-markers included. Each little plane is almost 7 x 7 inches big. Kids are likely to need help getting the stickers off the sheets, especially if they have no fingernails to get them started. That said, this is a fun kit for a play date or encouraging boys to use fine motor skills. 5 & up.

eeBoo Holiday Chain Set
(eeBoo $10.00 Score: )

We have mixed emotions over this set of 24 foot long pieces of two sided print paper. The pieces had links at the end so no glue is needed, though we think it takes more dexterity to fasten them than most young kids will have. We suspect you will end up giving them glue to make them stick. That said, they are highly decorative and thicker than most chains we made as kids.

Origami Studio Book & DVD
(Michael G. LaFosse, Tuttle Publishing $16.99 Score: )

Tuttle has been the publisher of the best Origami books for years. Now they have taken it to the next level by packaging it along with a DVD that can be stopped and started as you work step by step to follow and learn all the folds. In no time you and your child will be able to make fish, flapping birds, butterflies,  boxes--among so many other shapes. Use these to decorate the house for the holidays. Use them for a fun way to refine visual and fine motor skills along with patience all with fun payoffs. The kit comes with 70 sheets of colorful origami paper. This is so much better than a book and paper alone.  It's a book, a DVD, and a craft kit all in one. The DVD holds your hand and makes this ancient art form easier than ever!
