Stirring up a batch of brownies, decorating cookies, or crafting a small gift with their own two hands--these are just a few ways to give them a sense of doing something for someone else. A ready made kit with all the fixings with step by step directions can simplify the process and introduce them to new skills at the same time. Here are a few new kits with rewarding end products.

2013 Award
Loop De Doo Necklace Kit
(Loopdedoo $16.99 Score: )

Designed to be used with the Loop De Doo Spinning Loom, (not included) this kit includes 9 hammered silvery links in various sizes and styles plus 18 easy open/close links and 12 skeins of thread. Necklaces (or even belts) are made in sections and then connected with the links. This is just one of three new kits that extend the use of the original loom. They say 8 & up. We'd say 8-9 will need adult help in getting it started and perhaps with the links. That said, this is a winner.

2013 Award
Crayola Melt 'n Mold Crayon Factory
(Crayola $49.99 Score: )

We've had crayon molds before, but this new and improved model with see through lid made a huge hit with our testers. It comes with molds that will make ring shaped crayons as well as the usual shape. The kit comes with 24 crayons ready to melt and/or you can use old broken crayons as well. Designed for safety, the lid locks down while the crayons melt. Once they turn to liquid you push the button to spill the wax into the mold. Again, all of this is done while the see through lid is locked down. The lid will not lift until a timer releases it and the wax has cooled. Extra molds for making cars, spiders, spinners, and wiggly shaped crayons are available separately. A great way to recycle old crayons and, as always, kids love using the unique end products they make. This is marked for 8 & up and since it has to be plugged in, it is a toy that should be used with adult supervision.

2013 Award
Creativity for Kids Paracord Wristbands
(Creativity for Kids $15.99 Score: )

Designed to appeal to boys, Paracord Wristbands involve macrame-type weaving with thick parachute cord. It comes with eight colors, buckles, stickers, scissors, glue, and clear instructions. There are enough supplies to make eight wristbands. Marked for 7 & up, but we think most boys of seven will not have the dexterity to do this. We'd say it's a better choice for 8-9's.

Age: Early School Years, Later School Years. Award Year: 2013.
