If you are looking for an alternative to the usual TV fare, look no further! This is a collection of seven DVD's with storybook classics every child should know. Some are more animated than others and none of these are brand new. Originally shown in libraries, these storybooks use the original text and art of some of the most beloved children's books. Many are narrated by famous actors and provide over seven hours of entertainment that you'll want to use a little at a time. This is nothing like Saturday morning TV--in fact, it is not frenetic or created to sell anything but a good story and illustrations that enhance the telling. In fact, each of the stories is entertaining without the usual frenetic cartoon pace. Done in stop action animation, the dialogue is little more than a series of grunts and baas, but the stories are told with wit and wooly good fun. Handsome still photos are used to illustrate this big book with factoids that school aged kid will pour over. But it's the DVD with live footage of life under the water that sets this apart. Using an alphabet format this is a little less fluid than Annie Crawley's other DVD’s such as Who Lives in the Sea?, What Makes a Fish a Fish?, or Dive into Diversity. That said, lots of kids like to be able to hold a book in their hands and look at the pictures for as long as they wish, rather than the fleeting images on a video.

Informative and entertaining, this is broken into "chapters" so it need not be watched in its entirety in one sitting. We especially enjoyed the images of those scavengers the nudi, nudi, nudibranchs and the eight armed animals and how they use their tentacles to feed! Also, from the same company, Dive Into Diversity, which includes amazing undewater footage of a kept forest, crusty crustatians and night diving scenes. A handsome DVD accompanies Jim Arnosky’s newest book about crocodiles. His illustrations take readers to the Florida mangroves where crocodiles live with so many other wild creatures. It’s a safari adventure as this gifted artist and naturalist explains the difference between alligators and crocs found deep in the Everglades.
