Important Advisory:

The Asterisk on the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Lead-Free* Platinum Award list indicates that samples from only one particular batch of these toys tested lead free.  Other production runs or samples of the same products may contain lead.

We have not had the other toys on our website independently tested for lead content. For the future, we are requiring companies to provide us with documentation that their products have been tested by an independent lab and found to be free of surface and embedded lead, as well as phthalates.

Summer Travel Tips from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio as featured on the Today Show 5/22/2001

Here are some Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award winners just right for travel time (and home). We've also posted new Smart Parent Tricks™ for travelling with kids. Don't forget, you can find other age appropriate travel products by clicking on the buttons to the left and looking in the Travel Toys links you'll find there.

Infants and Babies
You'll want to have a variety of playthings for entertaining your baby and toddler--knowing that no one toy will entertain them for long. You want to bring multiple choices for variety that you can pull out of the bag. Choose toys with different textures and actions for baby to investigate. While it sometimes feels like you've brought everything but the kitchen sink, do be sure to bring the comfort of familiar things from home. Take along the music box from the mobile, a favorite blankie and lovie.

Hug & Tug Sprout
(Sassy $5.99) This zany-looking purple critter has a happy face, colorful fabric knobs on its head, and tricky hands and feet that pull and slide to make long arms or long legs. An interesting toy for tots to explore, with knobby chewy teether hands. 6 mos. & up. (800) 323-6336.

Hoopla Baby Woozle
(Manhattan Baby $ 12) This whimsical "woozle" attaches easily to car seat or stroller and has multiple textures and sounds. Shaped like a long bug with big eyes and a little mirror under its mouth, its patterned legs can be pulled from side to side and its feet have interesting crinkle, squeaks and rattle sounds. 6 mos. & up. (800) 747-2454.

Bye-Bye Activity Butterfly
(Mary Meyer $10) Easy-to-grab rings add another texture to this velour bug with stitched features, big eyes, smiling face, and wings with a squeaker, mirror, crinkle, and rattle. Great for tracking and early investigations. 6 mos. & up. (800) 451-4387.

Hullabaloos Puppets
(Manhattan Toys $5 each) Although these are designed for preschoolers, Drew the Dragon and others in this new line have no small parts and are ideal hand puppets to interact with a baby or toddler. Colorful with big eyes and sock puppet style mouth, they slip easily on your hand. Yet your hand can still be used as needed for baby. Their easy on /off design make them ideal for preschoolers to use with independence for pretend play. 3 & up. (800) 747-2454.

Books
Bring along a few good books to share. Try fabric books like the charming new Maisy books (Candlewick $6.99) for "independent" page turning. Or look for the Discovery Farm Book (Lamaze $12.95), a well-crafted fabric book with parent and baby animals to move about. Animals have textures and there are lots to talk about as you turn the puffy pages together. Or introduce them to Olaf the Elephant and Venus the Mouse in their many adventures in Home or Shopping (Candlewick $4.99) where the challenge is to find the single object shown on the left side in the busier illustration on the facing page.
