Important Advisory:

The Asterisk on the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Lead-Free* Platinum Award list indicates that samples from only one particular batch of these toys tested lead free.  Other production runs or samples of the same products may contain lead.

We have not had the other toys on our website independently tested for lead content. For the future, we are requiring companies to provide us with documentation that their products have been tested by an independent lab and found to be free of surface and embedded lead, as well as phthalates.

Summer Travel Tips from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio as featured on the Today Show 5/22/2001

Preschoolers
Threes and fours are ready for a little independent play time-look for time busters. Look for toys that keep hands busy and imagination active.

Woodkins
(Pamela Drake $11.95 & up) These wooden "paper " dolls made a huge hit with our testers. They come with fabric choices that stay in place thanks to a "frame" that lifts and closes over the edge of the doll. Kids can also change the doll's mood with four different faces. Available as generic girl or boy with several ethnic variations or as Madeline, DW, or Arthur. We like the double pack with both Arthur and DW. Packaged in a carrying case these are ideal for travel or quiet time anywhere. 4 & up. (800) 966-3762.

For more traditional doll play, Coffret Julie (Corolle $35) has everything a little caregiver will need in this over the shoulder carrying case-including a little 8" Mini Calin doll, diaper, bib, bottle, & towel. Or for a bigger 11-14" doll the Sac a dos nurserie ($30) provides a back pack carrier with room for dolly's changes and other take alongs. (800) 628-3655.

Both boys and girls can make up their own stories with Feltkids.
You can't take the toy train set on the road, but here's a Thomas & Friends Deluxe Playset (Learning Curve $25) with track printed on one side and seashore on the other. Comes with felt train and accessories for lots of action; Also wonderful the new Fold and Go Travel Boards ($13) that come with 15-20 playing pieces in a tote. Available in several themes such as Birthday Party & Fashion Girls, Princess & the Frog. 3-6 (800) 704-8697.

For Active Breaks
Gertie Balls (Small World Toys $6) When you travel kids still need active breaks. These Gertie balls can be taken flat and blown up with a straw that comes in the pack. Building their catching skills and confidence calls for selecting balls with some care. A soft beach ball is easier to catch than small hard bouncing balls. Gertie Balls are gummy inflatable balls soft enough for kids who may be scared of big heavy balls coming toward them. We particularly like the new Magical Color Changing Gertie ($6). Put in a cold place it turns pink; toss it and your warm hands and your prints show up in blue! 3 & up. (800) 421-4153.

Music to Share
Great time to introduce your kids to music you like now or your old favorites. Something about being in a car lends itself to folk music or show tunes and when your kids are still young you can get away with belting the songs out without their complaining.
