What is it that fascinates children about dinosaurs? Is it their enormous size? Their monstrous looking teeth and claws? Is it their deliciously long complicated names that six and seven year olds take pride in mastering? Learning the alphabet is the first thing that pops into mind when we think of getting preschoolers ready to read. But knowing letter names and sounds are just one of the many skills needed for reading. Although preschoolers like playing around with letters as they sing the alphabet song and try writing their names, there are other equally important skills they need to develop that are easy to build on during these preliterate years.
