Ann Williams Giving Hearts Craft Kit

(Ann Williams $14.99)

This reminds me of the red felt sachets I made as a 4th or 5th grader, when I stayed home sick, with a cold. Mine were stuffed with cotton balls, scented with a touch of my mother’s perfume. The precut hearts in this new kit come in several sizes...all of them small, as pictured on the box. They are designed to be half felt (grey) with a matching piece made of paper. Kids use markers, crayons or paint to make their own patterns or messages on the paper. The pre-punched pieces are then ready to sew together with one of the colorful threads in the kit that also includes a plastic needle. Clear directions show how to add a pinch of stuffing (provided in the kit) to give hearts a puffy look and finally, how to add a loop so they can be hung. The small pieces call for fine motor skills. I found the thread a bit heavy to go through the eye of the needle, but if you have a threader that will help, or split the thread some. Nice for Christmas tree decorating and to give for Valentine’s Day. Marked for 6+. We think 6s will be able to do it, but with considerable help with threading and tying knots. It’s probably a better choice for 8s and up.

Ages: Tweens
