BigJigs Chunky Puzzle-Farm

(BigJigs $19.00)

A chubby pink pig, spotted cow, a brown horse, a wooly sheep and a red tractor; all five pieces fit into a green meadow scene with a small barn and blue sky as background. The raised pieces are easy for little hands to lift out and fit back into the board. Beautifully painted, it’s also a color matching game that helps beginning puzzle players find the space that is the same color as the animals. A fun way to reinforce knowing and naming color words and familiar farm animal names. Hold onto those animals and tractor, after they outgrow the puzzle. The pieces stand and can be used for dramatic play with blocks. Marked 12 months, but really a much better choice for twos and young threes.

SNAP: Whole piece puzzles like this are a good starting place. The chunky pieces are easier to grasp and maneuver back into the puzzle board. Use the animals for playing riddle games such as "I'm thinking of an animal that walks on two legs." Or line the animals up then say "Close your eyes." Now remove one of the animals. Ask, "Which animal is missing?" On another occasion sing Old MacDonald had a farm and lift out the animal you are singing about.
