Thames & Kosmos Code + Control Dinosaur Robot REX

(Thames & Kosmos $55)

First things first, they’ll need to assemble the Tyrannosaurus Rex Robot. We show you the many parts that they'll need to use before they start coding. Once assembled, kids can program up to 50 actions. Like most of these building sets, this is no instantaneous job. Directions need to be followed in a step-by-step orderly fashion for the cumulative effect, if it’s going to work in the end. This calls for careful reading and doing. In other words, its play that calls for thinking and doing. That said, the rewards and a sense of empowerment are real when it’s all together and the T-Rex follows their commands. This is marked 8 and up. Maybe older early school kids can do this with a parent. We think it's a better bet for tweens.
