Q-BA-MAZE 2.0 Starter Lights Set

(MindWare $34.95)

Our testers couldn't stop experimenting with this small Starter Lights Set with 24 cubes, four light up cubes, and 14 steel marbles. Set it up in any number of formations to make the falling marbles hit the lights as they spill down and out of the maze. It’s a thinking child’s toy that they may let you play with if you are lucky. Finding the way to build the steepest pass-ways calls for problem solving along with lots of trial and error. Fitting the pieces together also requires dexterity and fine motor skills. Note, all the Q-BA-Maze sets come with small steel marbles that need to be kept out of the hands (and mouths) of children who still mouth their toys. This set has an added caution since the light-up cubes have small button cell batteries that are a hazard if swallowed. That said, this is a challenging and engrossing STEM construction toy that introduces the world of physics in a hands-on way. It’s marked for 6 and up, but like the other sets in this line, we think this is a better choice for tweens…8 and up, up, up. Note: A larger set ($59.95) with double the number of cubes and lights will be available later in the holiday season.

Ages: Tweens, Teens
