(Connetix $75) If you're in the magnetic tiles zone, you'll want to check out this new 50-piece set that comes with three wheeled bases. One is longer than the other two - all three can be hooked together to create a very satisfying moving tiled vehicle. Our testers also loved that there was a variety of pieces in this set including 2 windows, open-frames, various triangles, rectangles and squares. These are pricey sets for sure, but will have lasting play value.

There is a great starter set with 48 pieces - Pastel Portal Pack ($69) that includes 8 of the oversized squares, 8 regular sized squares and 32 mini squares. Also amazing is the 202 piece Magnetic Tiles Pastel Mega Pack ($219) - this is definitely a call in the grandparents type of set.

Our testers really loved their new Bright Portal Packs which give you three different size portals or windows to work with. The oversized portal can contain the two smaller sizes which makes them great fun. This set includes 48 pieces - the kit and the company's website has building suggestions -- but don't get stuck on building what you see. Having your kids experiment and build structures without "following instructions" is very important -- it builds their creativity as well as their confidence to experiment. Our testers also gave high ratings to their new 48 piece Glitter Castle Pack ($69.99) that comes with 32 squares and 16 triangles in two different shapes.
