(Peaceable Kingdom $24.95) Our preschool testers loved the action of going around the mountain with the little wooden engine. The game play here is to fill up your mining card with the gems you collection as you round the track. There are gem stones that will line the track area. To start you spin the spinner to know where the train should go. Now here's the really fun part -- you place the die under the engine which moves as the engine moves. When your engine stops in the color designated by the spinner, you lift the engine to see what color is face up on the die. If it matches the color of the gem you stopped in front of -- you made a match. We love that this is a cooperative game. There's also an easier way to play so you don't need to get the specific color on your mining card.
Our younger preschoolers abandoned the rules pretty quickly and just enjoyed taking turns moving the engine and grabbing the stone they stopped in front of on their turn.
Playing games with preschoolers is more about having fun, learning about doing things in some order and taking turns. If any of the above happens -- you're doing great. Don't worry so much about the specific rules. As they get to the next stage -- they will become very, very interested in playing by the rules.
