We're suggesting you start with the smaller 18 -piece set of Clixos. It's a magnetic building set with lots of discovery built into the flexible pieces. There are no small magnets to worry over and the set comes with some starter ideas for making a ball, a crown, a bendable snake, and a helicopter. We like the open-endedness of the pieces that call for imagination and flexible thinking. We think older preschoolers and early school age kids will get it. We have some mixed feelings about the larger sets that include a a few round steel balls encased in plastic. They are NOT magnets, which would be dangerous if accidentally ingested, but rather made of steel. That said,, we worry about some preschoolers and young school age kids who are famous for putting small things in their mouths. We'll leave it to you to decide if you decide to opt for a larger set, or stick to this Itsy set. Either way, this Itsy Set (in yellow and hot pink or blue and red) is a nice way to discover if the materials hold your child's building interests.
