For fives and up, this huge three feet wide butterfly-shaped puzzle gives puzzlers a spectacular pay-off — a great reward for fitting all 53 pieces together. Given the size, this is best done on the floor, in a place where it can remain on display for a while. The hearts, flowers and smaller butterflies will serve as clues as they fit the big pieces together. It’s also helpful to follow the shape of the butterfly, locating all the outside edges with their distinctive patterns and colors. There are shimmery pieces that will add to their visual delight. You might want to pair this with a picture book about butterflies or check out the many kinds of butterflies pictured online. We like the sturdy box that will keep the pieces safely stored away for another day. Kids like doing and redoing their puzzles as they gain mastery over them. Shaped puzzled can be a little more of a challenge for beginners, so give them some strategies the first few times they do this. Appropriately marked for 5 and up.
